Last 4 March, at a signing ceremony with the Singapore 2006 Organising Committee, BMW Asia Pte Ltd and Performance Motors Ltd announced the plan to provide 420 units of the latest BMW 7 Series for the 2006 International Monetary Fund-World Bank (IMF-WB) Group Board of Governors and Annual Meetings. These meetings will take place in Singapore in September 2006, and heads of the delegation from 184 countries will have use of the vehicles for the duration of the conference.
Dr Tan Chin Nam, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts and Chairman Singapore 2006 Partnership Advisory Committee, Mr Klaus Berning, Vice-President, BMW Group Sales Division for Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Eastern Europe, and Dato Ahmad Zubir Murshid, Group CEO of Sime Darby Berhad, signed the letter of intent for the partnership at a ceremony that took place at the Ritz Carlton Hotel.
Dr Tan said, "BMW, a multi-national corporation with global prominence no less, clearly recognises the significance of this event. We are honoured to have BMW Asia and Performance Motors as our partner."
"For their commitment, the Singapore 2006 Organising Committee will explore partnering with BMW further in a few other Singapore 2006-related events", said Dr Tan.
For his part, Mr Berning said, "We are honoured to be able to support Singapore in this most significant of events. As the most successful 7 Series in the history of BMW, we are setting a new standard in the luxury performance class and in technology once again with this new forthcoming new 7 Series."
Said Dato Ahmad Zubir Murshid, "With the support and backing of our principal, BMW, we can assure the organising committee and everyone involved that Performance Motors have the pedigree and track record to ensure the success of the event."
Apart from the BMW 7 Series, BMW Asia and PML will also provide specially trained drivers for the limousines as well as handle expenses such as fuel, maintenance and insurance. The Singapore 2006 Organising Committee estimates that the partnership is worth about S$10 million.
BMW Group has provided limousines for major international conferences and summits such as WTO meeting in Singapore 1996, Europe Asia Meeting in Seoul 2000, APEC Summit in Brunei 2000. BMW 7 Series was also the official car for the APEC Summit in October 2003 in Thailand.
