Frequently Asked Questions for BMW cars not purchased through PML

1. Why is buying a BMW from PML worth the investment?

Performance Motors Limited (PML) has been representing BMW in Singapore since 1979 and we are a member of the Sime Darby Group. As an established company synonymous with sheer driving pleasure and service excellence, we take pride in our reputation to bring the JOY of BMW to our customers.

The Sime Darby Group has made substantial investment in PML and a purchase of a BMW from PML is not viewed as a transient transaction.

Instead, we view our relationship with our customers as a continuous commitment to professional and reliable customer care.

2. How committed is PML as an authorised distributor to its customers?

PML believes the ownership experience of a BMW should be joyful and all-encompassing beyond the point of purchase. Hence, our commitment efforts are continuously focused on bringing an even better infrastructure and service quality to our customers.

An overview of examples that demonstrate our commitment include:

  • Opening the state-of-the-art BMW sales and service centre - Sime Darby Performance Centre at 303 Alexandra Road. The flagship centre in the region was unveiled in September 2008 and Sime Darby invested more than S$60 million, underlying the strong commitment to PML customers.

  • The revamp of the East Coast Centre Aftersales facility at 280 Kampong Arang Road to strengthen and complement our existing infrastructure. The $7 million investment was divested into refurbishment and equipment updates to ensure that our Aftersales customers receive the best care for their car.

  • Adoption of proprietary BMW cutting-edge technology to support the comprehensive range of Aftersales services. In addition, service workbay stations provide a real-time connection to BMW’s headquarters in Munich, allowing for instant software upgrades and ensuring that every car serviced is always equipped with the latest software available at that point in time.

  • The PML team will demonstrate the passion and zeal for the BMW brand in their line of expertise. PML sales representatives undergo rigorous product training to serve our customers better and the PML Aftersales team have done us proud by proving their mettle at the BMW International Aftersales Competition of Excellence (Best team in East Asia, 2007)

3. Does PML sell BMW cars that are of a higher equipment level?

PML sells BMW cars that tend to have a higher equipment specification level than many other countries. The standard specification of a BMW intended for use in another country may differ from the Singapore market. Product specifications are planned to match the needs and preferences of the Singapore car buyer and the compatible technology available in Singapore.

Consumers should exercise care to ensure that comparisons between pricing and product specifications are conducted fairly and with transparency.

4. There are other sources offering BMWs with a wider range of specs than PML, why is this so?

PML works closely with BMW to ensure that the BMW range is tailored to be technically and legally suitable for use in Singapore, especially with regards to cooling systems, glass, lighting, instrument display, and language settings.  Consumers may encounter new BMWs for sale with a different market standard specification which are not offered by PML from time to time. If the car is fitted with components differing from the Singapore standard, replacements may not be available or at some time in the future may take longer, as the parts need to be specifically obtained.

5. Is PML able to meet my request for a car that differs from standard equipment? For e.g. a manual transmission, a special colour not commonly available

PML does receive special requests from customers for models that PML does not have in stock, and hence PML will specially order the necessary for our customers.

6. Will PML cover the warranty of a BMW if it was not purchased through PML?

As of 1st November 2009, all other BMW cars purchased through sources beyond PML are subjected to a non-refundable registration fee of $15,000 – $30,000**, depending on car model, to service their cars with PML. There are certain mandatory documentation required to be submitted to PML during the application. All successful applicants will be notified by mail before work commencement.

As the authorized BMW importer in Singapore, PML will honour the 24-months manufacturer warranty, from the date of first registration. However, all warranty works will be chargeable at full retail rate, including all applicable taxes upon completion. Upon approval from factory, PML shall reimburse the customer based on the amount credited from the factory.

In addition, all cash works performed are subjected to a surcharge of 25% on top of the normal retail rate for both parts and labour.

8. Does PML cover other BMW cars that were not purchased from PML in safety campaigns conducted by BMW?

From time to time BMW initiate ongoing quality analysis, which may sometimes be safety related. The information relating to such safety campaigns is sent to us by BMW AG based on chassis numbers of cars we have imported directly into Singapore.

If you have purchased a BMW from other sources, that is not registered with PML*, this then carries a risk that the car will not be notified of the safety campaign.
